The Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association’s (CAMBA) 2012 Festival of the Trails is happening this Memorial Day weekend. If you haven’t had a chance to ride these trails this is a good weekend for an introduction to some of the best trails the Midwest has to offer! I’ve been up to the trails several times already this spring and have found them to be in perfect condition with the dry and early spring we have had.

Welcome Spring?

It’s hard to believe that less then 2 weeks ago we said good-by to winter with a trip to the U.P for a skiing and snowshoe adventure. Now, with temperatures in the mid 60′s we could not pass on a morning paddle. The water temperature was 36 degrees, there was “Smoke On The Water” and the ice held on along the shoreline. As the ice broke up it danced and the water sounding like a wind chime. The waterfowl, eagles and birds also enjoyed the sun and warm weather.

Farewell Winter

We said farewell to Winter with a trip to the U.P. this week. Awesome weather for a snowshoe/X-country ski outing. Skied and snowshoed up, and I do stress up, to Lake of the Clouds overlook. Used Fischer Nordic Cruiser skis and carried Northern Lite snowshoes on our packs, all needed to reach our destination. Was well worth the effort for the spectacular views.

The following day we snowshoed to Conglomerate Falls on the Black River. This river features quite a few waterfalls on its descent into Lake Superior. All are easily reached from County Road 513. You can access the North Country Trail here for some great hiking along the Black River canyon.

North Country Trail

It may be warm, but there is still quite a bit of snow in the woods. This past Monday we took a short trip up the North Country Trail near Mellen. This isn’t a groomed trail so you have to set your own tracks which is quite a bit of work, however the scenery and seclusion is worth it.

2012 Phillips Flurry Snowshoe Race

The 2nd annual Phillips Flurry Snowshoe Race as a great success! Perfect weather with a few inches of snow overnight before the race and temperature in the 20′s for the race start. Results and photos have been posted on the Phillips Furry website.

Back Country Skiing

Price County Wisconsin has miles and miles of hunter/walking trails that provide for some great back country skiing. Taking advantage of the 40 degree January weather we enjoyed an outing on one of these trails. If you have a favorite hunting trail or spring, summer and fall hiking trail, grab your skies and get out there in winter. It’s beautiful!
